FLUSHING, NY, April 9, 2009 C Crystal Window & Door Systems is nearing completion of its contract to manufacture and supply replacement window systems for the massive historic renovation and redevelopment project known as The BankNote at 1200 Lafayette Avenue in the Bronx. The project called for Crystal to supply a total of 2,150 Series 8100 Picture / Fixed and 8300 Project-In hopper style architecturally rated windows. The windows are erected in ganged and stacked configurations of 6 or 9 windows to fill 365 extra-large openings, some as wide as 12 and as tall as 18 on two of the facilitys main wings, including the front fa?ade. Ecker Windows of Yonkers, one of New Yorks leading fenestration construction firms, is handling the installation.

Originally known as the American Bank Note Building, The BankNote is located in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx and is a familiar sight visible from the I-278 Bruckner Expressway. The 405,000-square foot 98-year old industrial complex served national and international clients until the 1980s with engraving and printing for stock certificates, bonds, travelers checks, postage, tax stamps, letters of credit and foreign currency. The structure was designated a New York City landmark last year by the Citys Landmarks Preservation Commission and recently received the architectural Visionary Award from the Bronx Chamber of Commerce.

The Crystal Series 8100 and 8300 windows used for The BankNote project have been specially engineered to meet unique critical project specifications, preserving the historic details of the building and providing greatly enhanced energy efficiency. To match the landmark buildings rounded openings, which are non-uniform in curvature and shape, Crystal designed, modeled and tested special new arch top window frames to ensure an exact fit. The standard glazing pockets of the windows were expanded to 1-3/8 to accommodate historically accurate applied munton grids. Intended to replicate the hot-rolled large steel windows common in early 20th Century industrial buildings, the new Crystal windows feature a narrow frame option that increases glass area daylight and a durable AAMA 2604 certified powder coat black finish.

The new Crystal windows also feature an improved sill design, argon gas-filled insulated glass units using extra thick soft-coat low-E glass and PPG Intercept warm-edge insulated glass spacers for superior weather resistance and energy efficiency. A 7/8 face flange (also known as casement fin) frame and a structural steel mullion system greatly facilitated installation and enhanced the strength of the window systems needed for such expansive openings.

Increasingly, Crystals Architectural Windows Division is expanding beyond simple multi-family and commercial window projects and into the more demanding market of historic preservation. Crystals ability to meet unique and demanding project specifications is significantly improved through the availability of its vertically integrated aluminum extrusion subsidiary in Union, Missouri. Crystal Extrusion Systems supplied both standard and custom aluminum profiles for the new BankNote windows. Final assembly and glazing of the windows took place at Crystals Flushing, NY factory.

The BankNote will serve as a Class-A ranked office complex, targeting arts organizations, design firms, non-profit community groups and other corporate tenants. The building features unique loft and traditional office spaces and prominent amenities including a large retail food market. Taconic Investment Partners and Denham Wolf Real Estate Services own the complex, and world-renowned architecture firm Beyer Blinder and Belle is spearheading the historic renovation and adaptive reuse effort.
