Crystal COO Recognized as "Executive of the Month"
–Steve Chen Featured in Regional Real Estate Publication–
FLUSHING, NY, May 5, 2014 – National manufacturer Crystal Window & Door Systems´ Chief Operating Officer (COO) Steve Chen was recently recognized by a major northeast regional real estate development and construction publication. A full page article in New York Real Estate Journal (April 8, 2014 edition) highlighted Steve Chen´s dynamic leadership and accomplishments, focusing on the executive's change and improvement strategies driving the success of Crystal. In 2013, Crystal achieved record sales levels and double digit percent growth over the prior year, largely due to Chen´s efforts and initiatives.
"When I joined Crystal, started by my father Thomas Chen, one of the major challenges was the transition from a family business to a corporate enterprise and remain successful," said Steve Chen. "I saw technology-driven operational improvements as one of the keys to making this transition and that´s where I focused my efforts." The article describes the many areas of the company that have made sweeping and significant improvements through the use of technology, automation, and telecommunications, all spearheaded by Chen.
Crystal´s manufacturing processes have for many years utilized computer-controlled automated equipment for glass cutting, insulating glass assembly, window frame/sash extrusions and final assembly. Building on this, Chen championed additional ways to incorporate technology in the design process, as well as the front-end purchasing facet of the overall production operation, and delivery of the finished products. Crystal uses 3-D printers to develop new window frame designs and components and has invested in computerized window performance test equipment to conduct in-house tests of new designs, greatly speeding the development process and moving new products and product improvements into production more rapidly.
Communications with employees at Crystal´s various national locations and with customers through Chen´s initiatives have been greatly enhanced through the use of several electronic platforms and other technology advances. The company communicates with trade customers, suppliers, architects, contractors and outside organizations in multiple ways, including computer networking, smart phones, laptops, teleconferencing, website enhancements, email newsletters and social media. Implementation of a new enterprise-wide integrated management information system that will substantially enhance and improve the sales and order placement process is also underway.
Steve Chen, who was promoted to COO early this year, has officially been with Crystal for 10 years. Unofficially, Chen was involved with the family-owned enterprise from his childhood in many hands-on capacities throughout the firm. Chen is the current President of the Northeast Window & Door Association (NWDA), serves on an advisory board to the New York Federal Reserve Bank and is active with many regional non-profits. Past recognitions of Chen include Glass Magazine's 20 Under 40 List and Queens Chamber of Commerce Top 10 Business Executives, and he has served for several years as a judge for Window & Door Magazine´s annual industry awards. Steve has also been honored by The Child Center of New York and Queens Library Foundation among others for his philanthropic work.
