On the afternoon of August 23, 2011, Adolfo Carrin, Jr., the Administrator of Region II (NY and NJ) for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, along with his staff visited Crystal Windows. Administrator Carrin met with Crystal?s President Thomas Chen and Executive Vice President Steve Chen. The HUD guests toured the factory to witness the fabrication of Crystal energy efficient aluminum and vinyl windows.
As the former Borough President of the Bronx before he was appointed to join the Obama Administration in 2009, Mr. Carrin is very familiar with the New York City housing situation. Now with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Mr. Carrion oversees programs to meet the need for quality affordable rental homes and strengthen the housing market. Many Crystal products are used in HUD financed and subsidized residential housing properties throughout the nation, said Steve Chen. This was a great chance for Mr. Carrion to see the how our windows and doors can contribute to the quality and energy efficiency of HUD properties.
The following morning, Steve Chen hosted Seth Pinsky, President of the NY City Economic Development Corporation (EDC), which leverages the City?s assets to promote economic growth across industries and businesses of all sizes within the five boroughs. After meeting with Crystal executives, Mr. Pinsky and his staff toured the 200,000-ft2 manufacturing facility. Crystal is definitely an EDC success story, said Steve Chen. Ten years ago, EDC initiatives helped us to remain a New York City manufacturer and locate our factory and headquarters building in the College Point Corporate Park, one of the industrial/commercial districts administered by EDC.
The Crystal facility is particularly notable since it is the largest window fabrication facility and one of the largest manufacturers of any type in New York City. The factory employs about 300 workers on site, produces over a half-million window units annually and spans the length of an entire city block. The facility features some notable state-of-the-art production equipment including vinyl extrusion, insulated glass fabrication, vinyl window frame and sash automated welding and an in-house R&D/Quality Control window and door test chamber. The building is also home to Crystal?s corporate offices, warehousing and shipping operations, its local and national sales organization, and a two-level trade professional product showroom.
Crystal Window & Door Systems is also notable as an immigrant and minority manor business success story. Thomas Chen founded the company in 1990 after immigrating to New York City from his native Taiwan a few years earlier. The company continues to enjoy success despite the poor economy due to its knowledgeable and dedicated staff, broad aluminum and vinyl product line and the outstanding value these energy efficient products offer customers.
Crystal Window & Door Systems is one of the top 40 manufacturers in North America of replacement and new construction vinyl and aluminum window and door products and high-end fenestration systems. Crystal offers a full product line, rapid order-to-delivery times, quality workmanship, innovative product features and outstanding value.
